My Favorite Waterfalls in Australia

My Favorite Waterfalls in Australia

Who doesn’t love a good waterfall? The way the water cascades and is framed by curtains of mist has a hypnotizing effect. They are both graceful and incredibly powerful. I had the opportunity to explore just three of the amazing waterfalls that Australia has to offer. Check them out below!

  1. Purling Brook Falls | Springbrook National Park

One of the highest falls I had seen in awhile, coming to about 358 ft (about half the size of Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite), it felt like you could look up forever and still see the water cascading over the top. The view from the top of the trail is breath taking in itself, but to get a good perspective of it’s height you have to hike to the bottom of the valley. The hike along the cliffs was a great adventure and offered views that just can’t be done justice through pictures or detailed accounts. At the base of the falls, rainbows shoot off through the mist and the colors of the surrounding rock face truly saturate the landscape with rich warm colors. If your looking for a day hike in Queensland, I would highly suggest this one.

  2. Killen Falls | Tintenbar New South Wales

We actually found out about these falls from a young guy about our age that was working at the 7 Eleven by our AirBnB. We went to go get our morning coffee and hot chocolate for our trip to Bryon Bay that day, and as we were checking out he suggested we make the stop at the falls that were about 35 miles from our destination. We were not disappointed. The way the falls had carved out the landscape around it reminded me a lot of the cenotes in Mexico. You could walk above the falls and behind them. Although we were heading into Bryon after this pit stop, we didn’t care we had to go behind the falls. it was misty! We definitely were soaked after a few minutes back there, but its a picture taking experience I won’t ever forget.

  3.  Curtis Falls | Tamborine National Park

The trek to Curtis Falls was more of a nature walk than a hike I will admit. The walk however offered breathtaking views of the subtropical rain forest, and you could really immerse yourself in the environment. You walk through minor switchback under massive eucalyptus trees and on bridges over a small creek. The waters give of opal hues in the mid day, and the leaves of the trees and greenery glow shades of yellow and green, this was one of my favorite places in Australia. The falls themselves are fenced off by the top to detour anyone trying to get that perfect selfie and slipping on the mossy rocks at the base of the falls. Although the falls were the point of us coming to the area, I do believe that the greenery and beauty of the trail itself stole the show.

10 Gift Ideas For The Adventurous Soul

10 Gift Ideas For The Adventurous Soul

We have all been there, it’s your friends birthday in a week and they already have absolutely everything they could ever want. They are the type that if they want something, they buy it and you are left with no gift ideas for this year’s birthday. If you find yourself not being able to afford a day out, or a mini trip to a beach or the mountains, here are some gift ideas that will please any friend with an adventurous soul.

  1. Passport Holder

We all know how long the process of getting a passport takes, there is the forms, awkward photos, and long waiting period. So a great cover or holder is a great idea as a gift for a friend who makes good use of theirs! You can even get them customized for an extra special touch.

    Passport Wallet $29+

 2. Jewelry

Coordinates have hit a certain craze lately, but that’s not the only adventurous themed jewelry that is out there. Check out some of the items below that are perfect for any wandering mind.

3. Key chain

You have like all of $5 to your name but don’t want the birthday person feel unloved so here is a little something to make them smile. A personal favorite are the types that have “multi-use” – ya know to open water…

4. Journal

Does your friend not have a written bucket list? Get them started! A journal is perfect for their adventurous mind to write down all of their ambitions and lists of mountains they want to hike one day.

5. Stickers

Another smaller idea to add to the mix. Stickers are great to slap onto canteens, vans, and coolers. Who doesn’t like to add a little personality to their gear?

6. House Decor

If you are like me, your obsession with the outdoors doesn’t just stay outside, it follows you into your home. Artwork and house decor that revolves around wanderlust and the outdoors is one gift you can’t really go wrong with as a gift.

7. Camera Equipment

If your birthday person loves to bring their camera on their excursions, then a new camera strap is a unique gift that can be fully customizable and would get a lot of use.

8. Piggy-Bank

Support your loved one’s travel dreams by getting them a piggy bank besides the coffee can they have in the freezer. You can go with the classic look, or with the more hipster scene by getting them a glass growler piggy bank (bonus points if it has beer in it).

9. Apparel

We have seen the ads on Facebook that show John Muir quotes on t-shirts and jackets, everyone secretly wants one. There are loads of companies now that offer outdoors related apparel that can be worn both by the campfire and on the town.

10. Camping Supplies

This is a little more generalized but no one can really have too much camping supplies. There are the obvious things like tents and new boots, but some of us have those friends that a little homemade dry shampoo wouldn’t be the worst of gifts to give.

Of course the best gift would be an all expense paid trip to wherever they wanted in the world, but this list was geared towards those who maybe are saving for that a little later 😉 Is there something you think I missed? Let me know in the comments!

Laters 2016

Laters 2016

A Review Of 2016

Every time I ring in a new year I always tend to get too excited about the new plans I have for myself and forget all that I had just went through the past 12 months. So this post is an ode to 2016, the good, the bad, and everything in between.

____________________________________________________________________________

Out of the entire year I will say that April was by far the most unpredictable month. Four major things happened in those four weeks, more than I think I could ever imagine.

1. I met Matt  4 – 2 – 16

I gotta say that it’s nice to have someone who shares the same love for camping, North Shore, and off road movies. Little did I know that our first date at a local coffee shop in down town Honolulu would lead to all of the adventures that we had together in 2016.

2. Surprise Trip To California 4 – 8 – 16

I was having a bit of a bad week at school and at work and I remember laying upside down on my bed, day dreaming about eating dinner with my family, drinking coffee with my girls back home, and hugging my grandma. Then in the middle of an April afternoon 3 hours before my night shift at work I had the epiphany to take the first flight back to California after my shift ended. It was one of the craziest things I planned for myself on a dime. I think it is safe to say though that my family appreciated the surprise as well.

3. My First Apartment.  4 – 20 -16

My first step to “adulting”. I found a whopping 100 sqft studio apartment less than 2 miles from Waikiki Beach one day on Zillow and decided to give the whole rental application thing a try. Two days later I got the call from the property manager that the place was all mine! For the first month all I had was a blow up mattress that deflated in the middle of the night and a coffee pot, but hey it did the trick. Now it’s my little home, or tiki hut as my family likes to call it.

4. Accident 4 – 26 -16

My snapchats that day escalated pretty quickly. I went from working on my friend’s journalism project to landing myself in the trauma room. All I have to say after this ordeal is where a helmet. If you’re going to be an idiot at least be a smart idiot, even if that means having helmet hair while you work. You can’t trust the people driving in Waikiki, and if you get clipped like I did, then it’s good to be prepared. Trust me helmet hair is way better than dealing with all the baby hairs going in every direction from where they had to shave your head for stitches. Wayyy better.  But this event did bring me a lot closer to some friends that came to pass the days by, even though I looked a hot mess.

April thankfully came to an end and that is also where most of the bad things that happened in 2016 came to an end as well. Even though I’m pretty sure April may have tried to kill me, I’m still kicking today and grew a lot in that month time span.

GG 6-21-16

I got the news this day that my great grandmother GG had gone to be with The Lord. My GG was the matriarch of the family, and there’s a little hole now at every family gathering with her not being there. She passed away a few days shy of her birthday, so on what was to be her 89th birthday I did my first paddle out. Her and my great grandfather loved Hawai’i, and I had thought that when I had a big enough apartment I would bring her out here again. The paddle out was how I was still able to give my GG that little bit of Hawai’i again. Never can I look a plumeria floating and not think of her.

Turning 22

Frankly twenty two feels the same as twenty one (just fewer hangovers).  But my birthday this year got to be celebrated in a very Ashlyn styled way, my boyfriend planned an adventure day for the two of us. All he had told me was to bring along some thick socks and warm clothes. We live on a tropical island so I wasn’t too sure where this was heading.. But he drove us to one of my favorite beaches on North shore and packed us a picnic complete with a hammock. We ate fritos and swayed in the lime green hammock for a few hours until he said it was time for our next stop. I still had no idea what the warm clothes were for until we reached the ice rink in the middle of the island. He was taking me ice skating in July. There’s a lot of things I love in life but random adventures like this are beyond my favorite. It was a birthday I will not forget for years to come.

Australia

In early June I began to hang out with a girl from one of my classes from a few years prior. One day in discussion she asked where was one place that I would like to go at least once in my life, and with this even being written down in my bucket list, I said Australia. Fast forward to August and there I was riding shotgun in a car driving through Brisbane, Tugan, Coolongatta, and Bryon Bay. I got to feed wild parrots, walk behind waterfalls, and eat the best schnitzel in the world. This trip deserves more than a mention, so there will be a thread of posts soon to give details behind one of the most adventurous vacations of my life. All thanks to miss Kayla.

Deployment

We knew it was coming but it still surprised us. I got off of work one day to multiple text messages and voicemails from my boyfriend saying I needed to give him a call, when I did it turned out we had less than 22 hours till he was going to deploy. We spent the rest of the day stocking him up on fresh socks, hot coco mix, and whatever else he would need for the next few months under water. He was here one day and already on the other side of the world the next. Luckily I had a great deal of friends to keep me occupied during that time frame, and even though communication was sparse we made it work. It’s amazing how technology can keep people close these days. November came quickly and he was back on our tiny island again, I don’t remember what the first words we said to each other were but I did how strange it felt to be in a dress around him.

Ember

I didn’t realize until this year how much a gummy little smile could brighten up your day. On July 23rd 2016 at 6 pounds and 12 ounces my best friend Bailey gave birth to my God daughter Ember Ann. Now I am weak when it comes to kids, so naturally I cried when I got the Facetime video call and got to see her for the first time. Out of all the things that babies enlighten us on, a big one is that happiness comes in even the smallest of gifts.

These were just some of the major highlights of the year that make it very memorable. There was also weddings, more babies, visits from friends and family, and some enlightenments. But o many things happened in 2016 that I could sit here for all of 2017 typing them out. So here is to a new year and cheers to the past ones that have shaped us all.
