The Glowing Waves of San Diego

In mid April the California coastline began dazzling residents with what some call “a light show by Mother Nature”. The phenomenon behind the spectacle, The Red Tide, is an algal bloom caused by the recent storms along the California Coast. You can read the science behind it here. The Spring 2020 Bloom is composed of luminescent dinoflagellates that when agitated release an emission of blue light. During the day the shore waters are a red clay color hence the name Red Tide, but at night the breaking waves look as if they are charged by neon blue bolts of electricity. We compiled a gallery of images taken by a local San Diego photographer to showcase the allure of Mother Nature’s Light Show.

Photographer Greg Yde captured the following images of the Red Tide in various locations across San Diego.
